TESTIMONIALS

“I was skeptical at first with HalachaU and finding the “right” student. We had 7 students sign up from varying degrees of Jewish knowledge and practice.

It’s not watered down, its excitement factor is that we are going through Gemara, Shulchan Aruch and more. I start by going line by line in the source sheets and then use the slide show to make it practical. The questions and engagement I have received far more than I could have asked for.”

The HalachaU program is a great way to introduce Baleibatim to learning a comprehensive subject in Halacha. Written in a clear way, it guides you through the subject beginning from Gemara through contemporary poskim and practical application.

The class was practical Halacha on a higher level of learning that gave the students the chance to see and appreciate how the halacha they practice was developed. It’s not just dry Halacha. It’s the whys and hows of what we do from Chumash down to today, and the students could engage in the thinking process with the Posklm they were learning.

I have a mix of students in my HalachaU class, some that have some knowledge, others that have zero

They enjoy the class, they ask questions. It’s a good flow with great topics.

Thank you for letting us be a part of it!

“HalachaU has been amazing on our campus. It gave the advanced students the opportunity to see the depth and breadth of Halacha. HalachaU has a great balance of showing the process of getting to the Halacha and at the same time giving the practical real-world application with the different shitos. We had a lot of fun learning it. Almost all the students that started the course completed it. Most were not frum but loved the learning.”

I loved this course! It took us from the source in the Torah and Talmud through the Shulchan Aruch and the Shulchan Aruch HaRav and then to modern day rulings and practice. Through it all the teacher provided source material, Power Points and lesson notes that enriched the experience and furthered my understanding.

Halacha U provides an extraordinary opportunity for rigorous training in Rabbinical reasoning.  The comprehensive course utilizes source materials and sometimes conflicting authorities to take a deep dive into a subject.  Halacha U is designed to elicit discussion and each week I come away enriched and invigorated.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is Halacha U?

HalachaU is an organization that provides a curriculum to teach in-depth halacha classes for students who only have a little experience with Halacha. The program condenses and simplifies the materials of the popular Semichas Chaver Program created by Rav Elyada Goldwicht  that is currently in over 200 locations with over 3,000 weekly talmidim. The classes are a text based study of the background and underlying principles of the Halacha. The curriculum starts with the Gemara and Shulchan Aruch and follows the chain of the halacha to the contemporary Poskim, exploring not just Halacha L’meisa, but the reasonings and opinions behind the practical applications.

HalachaU is a branch of Semichas Chaver Chabad, a program directed by Rabbi Betzalel Bassman and Rabbi Avrohom Jacks. SCP-Chabad works in conjunction with numerous Lubavitcher Rabbonim to adapt the curriculum to follow the opinions of the Alter Rebbe, Tzemach Tzedek and Chabad Poskim, and HalachaU takes that material and condenses it into 8 week courses. SCP-Chabad & HalachaU are currently being taught in over 80 Chabad Houses around the world.

What topics are going to be covered in the next semester?

Hilchos Muktza after Pesach and Hilchos Tefila and Bais Hakenses after Tishrei. (We have a different schedule for Chabad House on Campus that follows the university semesters.)

Is there a cost to participate?

There is no cost for the Talmidim, all that is required is a desire to grow in Torah and Yiras Shomayim. The cost for the Chabad House is $400 for each 8 week semester that also comes with two review classes.

How often is the shiur?

Each semester has 8 classes, plus 2 review classes. There are 2 semesters per year.

What makes this course different from a practical Halacha Course?

HalachaU doesn’t just give simple questions and answers, it begins with a common halachic practice we often do simply by rote, and explores its basis in the Torah and Talmud, how it comes to us in the Shulchan Aruch, how the Alter Rebbe understands it, and how it’s interpreted and practiced in modern times. The course immerses the student in the two thousand years of scholarly learning and understanding, so that they emerge not just understanding what to do, but why they do it.

Participants feel that it is the perfect balance between a deep understanding of the background to the halacha and the extreme practical modern application.

What’s special about HalachaU is that each student can take the information from the shiur and bring it home to their family. After each shiur participants receive Q&A’s based on that week’s class to share practical halachos at the Shabbos table.

Can I get recordings of the class?

The classes are only available to regular participants. If someone misses a class they can get a recording but they are not available to the public.
